In August 2012 I was sitting in a hospice talking to my Uncle who was terminally ill with cancer; he said to me "he was at peace; that he had a good life and he did the things he wanted to do." He succumbed to the cancer about ten days later at the age of 60. That got me thinking, have I done the things I want to do in my life?
That very same week I received an email asking members of the Ottawa Brokers Association if anyone was interested in a trip of a lifetime to raise money for charity through the Dream Mountains Foundation. My first thought was, I would love to. My second thought was, I am an out of shape 45 year old busy Mom with a career, I can't do this. Back to my first thought... I would love to! So I took the first step on what promises to be a life changing experience, I am going to Peru to hike the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. A 44 km hike that will take us to an elevation as high as 13,776 feet above sea level.
I feel very blessed to have the wonderful support of my family and friends who have graciously allowed me to take time away from my busy life in order to partake in this amazing adventure.
The one thing I really like about doing this climb for charity is that all climbers are paying all their own expenses and every penny raised is going directly to the charities which are being supported through this event. This past year, I have lost five men I know to cancer. As such I am hoping to do my part and raise $5000 for charity. My chosen charity for this trek will be Motorcycle Ride for Dad. The goal of this organization is to spread awareness and fund research for prostate cancer, so that men can continue to be there for their families and friends for years to come.
I hope you will join me in achieving my goal of raising $5000 for this very worthwhile cause.
