Having caught the travel bug in a big way a few years ago, I knew that I wanted to tackle the Inca Trail in Peru next. When the opportunity presented itself to do so as part of the Dream Mountains Foundation Dream Team and raise money for the School Breakfast Program, I knew that this climb was meant to be.
The School Breakfast Program is an amazing charity that provides 11,000 children and youth in-need with a nutritional breakfast, in order that they may approach each and every school day with the energy and esteem necessary for academic success. Daily nutritious breakfasts are linked to improvements in learning, attendance, behaviour and self-esteem. The program operates in 148 Ottawa-area schools, with the philosophy that no child/youth be turned away, and serves over two million breakfasts per year.
I am lucky enough to have never started a school day on an empty stomach, but having recently spent a summer in Rwanda, I know what hunger looks like, and how it can prevent a child from acting like a child, or focusing on anything but the fact that they are hungry. My experience abroad made me sympathetic to charity causes overseas, but also reminded me that there is much work to be done at home to ensure that no child in Ottawa goes hungry, and that every child has an equal opportunity to succeed.
2013 will mark a year of milestones for me. Apart from turning 25, I have also recently lost my job in the cultural sector, and so will be embarking down a new career path. What better way to prove to myself that I'm up for the challenge than to hike the Inca Trail, and what better way to make this journey than in benefit of the School Breakfast Program?
I hope that you will follow the 2013 Dream Team in spirit on its trek to Machu Picchu, and consider helping me reach my goal of raising $5,000 for this worthy cause. Thank you.
